More powerful than the "61", the 74 CI engine would cause the 61 to be discontinued in 1952. With its fat tires, fully valanced fenders and fork tube covers, the Hydra Glide established a new look for American motorcycles.

The K-model was a very advanced design for it's day, featuring such current details as telescopic front fork, rear swing arm suspension, foot-shift, four-speed transmission and hand-operated clutch. The integral engine and gearbox case became a standard design on nearly all modern motorcycles.

The Servi-Car was originally intended for use by garages as a means of picking up and delivering customers by someone unfamiliar with motorcycles. A specially designed tow bar allowed for it to be attached to the car's rear bumper and towed. It's large storage compartment offered a perfect space for advertising. The price in 1932 was $450 fob factory, with tow bar.

During the 1950's the 74 Hydra Glide became the standard highway motorcycle in America. The "Hard tail" frame would become the focus of Harley-Davidson engineers in designing the 1983 FXST Softail, which recreated this look. Both foot or hand shift models of the FL were available..

Harley-Davidson's K models formed the basis of the new XL overhead valve Sportster, which was to become the most-produced Harley in history. The KHK version featured hotter cams and more performance. 1956 KH and KHK were the last side valve (or "flathead") motorcycles the company produced.

An option called the "Traffic combination" (the E designation) was offered for police units, consisting of different gearing, camshaft and carburetor. Police officers liked them because they accelerated quicker.
