The 1927 singles, offered in 4 versions - both OHV and side-valve generator and magneto types. This bike was a down-scaled version of Harleys bigger twins. The OHV models were quicker than the side valve versions.

Introduced in 1925, the flathead stressed simplicity, economy of operation, and long life. It was fitted with a Dow metal piston, lighter than aluminum. The bike was extremely easy to service, which increased it's popularity.

The 1929 was the last year of production for Harley's "pocket valve" engine. This engine had the intake valve located over the exhaust valve (IOE) in a small chamber adjacent to the cylinder. It was replaced by side-valve engines.

The "2-Cam" engine had a separate cam fore each valve lifter. This resulted in superior performance, and the Harley 2-Cammers won important race meets. In road trim, the 1929 JDH was the fastest Harley ever offered for sale.

Created in 1926, the little overhead valve single was produced until 1935.  Its competition counterpart, which was ridden by racing legend Joe Petrali, was known as the "Peashooter."  The "Tow Bullet Headlights" were standard feature of all 1929 and 1930 models.
