The Fat Boy was the only new model in the Harley-Davidson's 1990-model line. It's most outstanding features were its aluminum disc wheels unusual stepped shotgun style exhaust system and silver on silver paint scheme  and tank graphic.

In 1991, Harley-Davidson introduced a 5-speed transmission and belt final drive on both its sportster models. Only top of the line models got it: the high trim 1200cc model, and the 883cc Deluxe. The Deluxe is the only Sportster that featured wire wheels as standard equipment.

The original 1980 Stugis was named after a motorcycle rally in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the town of Stugis. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of that event, Harley-Davidson named and styled the first model of the new Dyna Glide vehicle in the spirit of the 1980 model Sturgis.
