Using the FXRT Sport Glide as a foundation, Harley-Davidson offered a special police unit to law enforcement agencies.  The all-new 1984, 80 cubic-inch "evolution" engine proved powerful and reliable.   After extensive evaluation, the California Highway Patrol accepted it as its standard patrol motorcycle.  The FXRP is also called "Pursuit."

The Disc Glide was a limited-production bike that featured such custom treatments as a spun aluminum rear wheel and special paint with gold graphics.  Its chrome plated engine and gearbox covers would become standard on several later models.

The Softail was so named because its designed to look like an older "hardtail" motorcycle-one that had a rigid frame.   Its rear suspension was concealed beneath the power train.  The Softail was an instant success and sold very well from its first introduction.

As new Harleys were being offered with "evolution" engines, a limited number (500) of FLHS Sport models were produced.   These featured the rigid-mounted Shovelhead engine and 4-speed gearbox.  It also had the 5.5-gallon "Fat Bob" fuel tanks, forward mounted foot controls and the classic headlamp nacelle.

The new 1984, 80 cubic-inch "Evolution" engine brought Harley-Davidson motorcycles into the 80's.  Its improved power, durability and quality gave the Sport Glide an added measure of performance.  The Sport Glide was not a big seller, but it had a large   following of enthusiasts.

The stripped down "back to bassics" XLX-61 shook up the motocycling world with its $3,995 price tag. Equipped with two-stage ignition, 8.8:1 compression and 9-spoke wheels, it presented an extraordinary value.

Harley-Davidson took the "factory-made custom" concept to another dimension when it came up with the limited production FXRC, with wire wheels and color matched side covers.  A total of only 1,075 units were scheduled to be built, each sequentially numbered.

To celebrate the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, special Liberty Edition motorcycles were created and sold in limited numbers. Each purchaser received a personalized certificate of ownership indicating the machines number in the series.
