The Wide Glide was one of the most radical factory-made custom styled motorcycles that Harley-Davidson ever made.  It featured such custom touches as a bobbed rear fender, fat 5.5-gallon fuel tanks, 21-inch front wire wheel, extended fork tubes, and a wild "flame" paint scheme.

A large 3.3 gallon fuel tank characterizes the Roadster.   With its sissy bar, two-tone paint and extended front fork as standard equipment, the Roadster was an upgraded model in the popular Spotster line.

Since its introduction in 1977, the Low Rider had become one of the most poplar Harleys ever.  With classic shorty duals, pull-back handlebar and wrinkle-black engine, it embodied a "custom build" look.  The rider's seat was a mere 27 inches from the ground.

To commemorate the Sportster's quarter-century, Harley-Davidson produced a special 25th Anniversary model.  Like all anniversary Harleys, it featured a special styling and graphic treatment and features that set it apart from standard models, such as the wire wheels.

By 1983, Harley-Davidson sidecars had been offered for 7 decades.   The 1983 type had a body made from fiberglass, and a sidecar wheel brake intergraded with the motorcycle's rear brake.  Sidecars are popular in "snow belt" areas, where the third wheel adds stability in snow and ice.

The XR-100, built in limited numbers, had an engine based on the XR-750 racing motor that dominated dirt track racing for two decades.   The XR-1000 featured 2 carburetors and racing-style exhaust system.  Only 1,748 were made in 1983 and 1984.

Features       Aerodynamic fairing and saddlebags

Harley-Davidson engineers developed the shape of the fairing and saddlebags in wind tunnel tests.  Based on an FXR Super Glide II, the Sport Glide offered increased acceleration and fuel mileage compared to the larger Electra Glide touring models, due to its slick shape and lighter weight.

Introduced the year before, the FXR's rubber-mounted, isolated power train became an instant success.  Its long traveled suspension offered superior ride and handling qualities.  The 1983 FXR featured "wire" spoke wheels as standard equipment.
