To commemorate Harley-Davidson's 75th Anniversary, two special models were offered, a Sportster and an Electra Glide.  The Sportster, painted midnight black and trimmed in gold, also featured aluminum wheels finished in gold and a genuine leather seat.

Features        Siamese exhaust

 

The 1979 model Spotsters featured a new frame inspired by the XR-750 racer and the unique "Siamese" exhaust system introduced on the 1977 Cafe Racer.  Despite a 5 horsepower increase due to this system, Harley riders never accepted it, and usually replaced it with Harley's staggered duals or a custom exhaust system.

 The classic model FLH had a bigger engine than the standard 74 CI model, and featured black spoke wheels and two-tone tan and cream paint with a 1936 "Flying Wheel" graphic on the Fat Bob tank.

The 1979 Roadster was a new model that featured drag-style handlebars, a fat 16-inch rear tire and deluxe appointments like the padded sissy bar. Extended front fork legs was another custom styling feature.

The Sturgis, with its orange-on-black paint treatment and drag-racing style handlebar, is considered a modern classic by many people. It was the first Harley to use low-maintenance belt drive, a feature eventually incorporated into nearly all Harley models.

A "Classic King" model Electra Glide, featuring two-tone paint and Tour Pac trunk as standard equipment, was offered in 1980.  The standard FLH-80 was produced in two forms: the FLH-1200 with traditional laced "wire" wheels, and the FLH-80 with cast wheels.

Features         New rubber mounted power train

The 1980 FLT  was an evolutionary step forward in technology for Harley-Davidson.  It boasted a new rubber-isolated system for the power train, a 5-speed gearbox, and enclosed chain final drive, among other features.  The isolion system was so successful that it was also incorporated in the all-new 1982 FXR.

After producing Sportster with "2-into-2" exhaust systems in 1978 and 1979, Harley Davidson designers returned to the classic "staggered shorty duals" for the 1980 models.  Twice as many XLHs were made than any other model.
