Harley-Davidson offered the RR250 for sale to compete in Class C professional racing in the U.S.A 350cc version holds the distinction of being the only Harley-Davidson to have won a World Championship, when Italian rider Walter Villa won the world title in 1977.

Harley-Davidson motorcycles, in police service since the company's early years, continued to serve in metropolitan police throughout the '70's.  The Boston police department provides a typical example of law enforcement agency that took advantage of the motorcycle's capabilities.

New federal regulations required shift levers to be located on the left. The 1975 and 1976 model Sportsters had a unique shift linkage system to accomplish that. Later 1977 models had new cases that eliminated the linkage.

Joining the FXS Low Rider in its 1977 debut, the XLCR was radical departure from Harley-Davidson's traditional styling.  Its racing lines were unprecedented.  A grand total of only 3,133 Cafe Racers were made, and it is now considered a cult bike.

The easy-handling SS-175 was one of the last small-displacement Harley-Davidson lightweights.  Combined with the 1,461 units of its introductory 1976 model-year, the total number of SS-175 Harleys sold in America was a mere 4 1,571.

The Low Rider created a whole new look in "factory custom" motorcycles.  Its low handlebar and special styling treatment made it a big success.  This was the start of a new era of custom styled motorcycles right from the factory.

The XL models consisted of 37% of the factory's total domestic model output for 1978.  Of the 17,561 Sportsters produced, 14,029 were standard XL and XLCH models.  The XLH's optional electric starting was the only major difference between the two.

Two special-edition models were produced to commemorate Harley-Davidson's 75th anniversary, a Sportster and an Electra Glide.   The Electra Glide II features unique graphics and a black and gold finish to set it apart from standard Electra Glides.
