In response to rule changes, Harley's racing department developed the XR-750 dirt track racer in only 4 months. It featured a short-stroke engine with iron barrels and heads. A road racing version was also made.

Harley-Davidson married an FL chassis to the XL front fork and came up with the FX 1200cc Super Glide. The body work was designed by Willie G. Davidson, grandson of company co-founder William A. Davidson. This styling was unique to the 1971 model year, dropped in '72.

The Rapido was one of several small, lightweight 2-stroke models targeted to appeal to entry-level buyers and youths. It was made by Harley-Davidson's Aeramacchi plant in Italy. Italian-made Harleys first appeared in 1961, when the 250cc Sprint was introduced.
